What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbs were the first drugs available to humans.  Over time our ancestors discovered which plants were harmful and which plants were helpful.  Herbal medicine is a traditional/folk medical practice based on the use of plants and their extracts.

Herbal medicine is based on a holistic view of the person meaning that it works on the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of the person as a whole.

The actions of the herbs often correct the underlying cause of illness, rather than with synthetic drugs which alleviate the symptom without addressing the underlying cause.

"A time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted"
Ecclesiastes 3:2
 What is an Herbalist?

"Herbalist" refers to a person that is involved in the study of the properties and
medicinal properties of plants.  They are a health practitioner who uses herbal medicines to promote the health and well-being of a person. The herbalist is versed in the preparation of herbal remedies.

Herbalists are trained in Western Herbal Medicine and may be trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine. Although some Herbalists may also be Aromatherapists and Naturopathic Doctors or Allopathic Doctors, this is not the case with all Herbalists

What is an Herbal Consultant?

An Herbal Consultant is competent to give advice regarding medicinal herbs.  They may create their own remedies or suggest existing herbal remedies.  Herbal Consultants are trained to understand how herbs interact with the human body and can give advice regarding interactions of herbs with allopathic drugs, vitamins and other herbs.

Are Herbal Remedies for Me?

Many medicinal herbs have no known side effects FOR THOSE WHO ARE
OTHERWISE HEALTHY AND NOT TAKING OTHER PRESCRIPTION OR
OVER THE COUNTER DRUGS!

A common mistake people make is to assume that, because herbs are natural,
they are completely harmless.  A case in point is Feverfew.  It has a tremendous
effect on migraines but should not be taken by those on blood thinners!
Herbal remedies do have the potential to do good when used responsibly, but they may cause harm when used carelessly.

How Does an Herbal Consultation Work?

The first visit is required for the consultant to ascertain what the client
is wanting to achieve.  This visit will encompass a full medical history and details of what medications, over the counter drugs, vitamins, herbs and pain remedies the client is currently taking.

The second visit will be of a shorter duration and consist of the suggestions the consultant has regarding the benefits of specific herbs tailored to the client's needs.  This will also be a time for the client to obtain any relevant information regarding the suggested herbal remedies.
